The 2018 Ford Explorer is a living legend. While it is one of the most recognized Ford cars, you might not recognize its new look. The Explorer is just rolling out of a Ford model refresh, but still seems to only break even. It is still big and roomy, but still not quite perfect. There are five different model trims to choose from: the base model Explorer and XLT, the Limited, Sport and Platinum editions. Let’s take a closer look at the new features.
STYLE & PERFORMANCE
The new Explorer just got an updated exterior. It now has a squared-off front fascia and available 20-inch wheels that will instantly remind you of a Land Rover. It has a wide body frame sporting 78.9 inches from mirror to mirror. The Platinum trim has the best interior style amenities. Nirvana leather seats, a heated leather steering wheel and wood accents bring the Explorer to the verge of being a true luxury SUV.
When it comes to performance, most Ford cars fall beneath their rivals. The Explorer isn’t winning any races, but it has a few nice options to suit different driving needs. There’s the base level 3.5 Liter, Ti-VCT V6 engine and a smaller 2.3 Liter, turbocharged four cylinder block. They’re both mated to a six speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive, but you can opt for all-wheel drive. The best overall option is the 3.5 Liter EcoBoost engine that gets best-in-class horsepower (365) and 350 lb-ft of torque.
Most of the sought-after safety features have been bundled into a package called the Safe and Smart package. You get adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. Along with lane-keeping assist, forward-collision warning, automatic high-beam headlamps, and rain-sensing windshield wipers. This impressive Ford safety package is standard on the Platinum model, and is available on all but the base model trims.
Once the king of mid-sized SUVs, the Ford Explorer now has to share the throne room with some tough competition. That being said, there is still a lot to offer in this Ford SUV. The Explorer has a stylish exterior that conceals its less than premium interior cabin. The twin turbo EcoBoost V6 engine is the preferred option. It’s quick and responsive. Advanced tech and safety features are all there, but not as standard features on all model trims. So, this Ford SUV sits in the middle of the pack, a great value-minded vehicle for budget-conscious auto buyers. See our full list of 2018 Ford reviews here.
